seeking to advance your career in biomedicine and interested in tackling modern issues around obesity
the University of South Australia – Australia’s University of Enterprise – is offering an project-based PhD with real-world impact within our Health and Biomedical Innovation group. Over 70% of Australian adults are obese. In females
a longterm diet with excessive fat and sucrose/fructose – a Western diet – leads to an elevated risk of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs)
such as obesity
cardiovascular disease
and liver dysfunction. A Western diet can alter the metabolism of women’s organs
including during pregnancy
and elevate the risk of NCDs in their offspring. Many of these conditions rely on lifestyle interventions combined with drug treatment during the life course of the offspring. Our project aims to understand the impact of maternal lifelong Western diet on fetoplacental drug metabolism ability and its interaction with specific organ insulin signalling and fat and carbohydrate metabolism. You will join an experienced cohort within Health and Biomedical Innovation. An established laboratory will equip you with all the facilities required for all analyses and a team of expert senior academics will provide a supportive training environment. Weekly team meetings provide a safe and collegial space to share information and gain insights from team members
while also helping you to build your communication and networking skills.
