Dear Dr. Olcese,
I am excited to apply for the position of PhD student at the University of Amsterdam, as advertised on your website. My name is Melike Cansel EREN and I am writing to express my strong interest in joining your team as a PhD student.
I have been following the research and work of your department for quite some time now and I am impressed by the innovative and groundbreaking projects that have been undertaken. The opportunity to be a part of such a dynamic and forward-thinking team is something that truly excites me.
I have recently completed my Master's degree in Neuroscience and I am eager to continue my academic journey by pursuing a PhD in this field. Your research project focusing on analyzing multi-area electrophysiological recordings with single-cell resolution in a mouse model of autism immediately caught my attention. As someone who is deeply passionate about understanding the complexities of the brain and its disorders, I am drawn to the opportunity to contribute to this important and impactful research.
My previous education and experience have equipped me with a diverse set of skills that I believe make me a strong candidate for this position. As a highly motivated individual, I possess the ability to work independently and efficiently, which I believe is crucial for a PhD student. I am also highly organized and possess excellent task prioritization skills, which have been essential in managing my academic workload during my Master's degree.
In addition to these skills, I have also developed strong communication skills through various experiences, including performing administrative and clerical tasks. I am also fluent in four languages - English, Spanish, French, and Catalan - which I believe will be an asset in working with a diverse team and communicating with participants from different backgrounds.
During my Master's degree, I gained extensive experience in general laboratory procedures, techniques, and documentation. I am also proficient in statistical analysis and software such as SPSS, MATLAB, and Python, which I have utilized in various research projects and coursework. My proficiency in using various software programs, including Microsoft Office Suite, will also be beneficial in creating scientific manuscripts and my PhD thesis.
One of my areas of expertise is in 3D cell culture techniques. I have also been trained in protein isolation, Western Blot, PCR, rt-qPCR, toxicity testing, IHC, Northern Blot, and ELISA. My experience in anatomical dissection studies for medical and veterinary purposes has also provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the techniques involved in this process.
I am also skilled in analyzing behavioral data and microarray data, and I have a strong familiarity with electrophysiology, imaging, protein purification, and optical and electron microscopy techniques. Furthermore, I possess an advanced level of proficiency in conducting animal experiments, behavioral experiments, anatomical dissection, and molecular analysis.
I am particularly interested in the opportunity to assist in-vivo multi-area electrophysiological recordings and optogenetics as part of this position. This will allow me to gain hands-on experience in these techniques, which I believe will be invaluable in my research career. I am also excited about the prospect of taking part in the teaching effort of the group, including supervising bachelor's and master's students. I am passionate about sharing my knowledge and skills with others and I believe this experience will not only benefit the students but also enhance my own learning.
In line with the requirements for this position, I hold a Master's degree in Neuroscience. However, I also have a strong background in mathematics, physics, and engineering, which I believe will be beneficial in understanding complex data and developing analytical methods. I have also gained significant experience in signal processing, brain data analysis, and behavioral testing, making me well-equipped for this role. I have also worked extensively with complex electrophysiological data, which will be advantageous in analyzing the existing dataset for this project.
I possess strong programming skills in both MATLAB and Python, which I have utilized in various research projects and coursework. I also have experience with in-vivo electrophysiology and I am in the process of obtaining an "article 9" (FELASA B) license, which I believe will be important assets for this position.
I am fluent in English, both written and spoken, which I have utilized in various academic and professional settings. I am confident in my ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and participants from different backgrounds and cultures.
I am highly enthusiastic about the opportunity to work with your team at the University of Amsterdam and I am confident that my skills, experience, and passion make me a strong fit for this position. I am excited about the prospect of completing a PhD thesis within the official appointment duration of four years and contributing to the important research on sensory processing deficits in ASD.
Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the opportunity to further discuss my qualifications and how I can contribute to your team. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require any additional information.
Sincerely,
Melike Cansel EREN
