Dear Hiring Manager,
As a highly experienced and skilled humanitarian professional, I was thrilled to come across the opportunity for the Temporary Programme Manager position at The Swedish Red Cross. With over 18 years of experience in disaster and emergency management, I am confident that I possess the necessary skills and expertise to excel in this role and make a lasting impact in your organization.
My name is Nicholas THUO and I have a strong background in disaster risk management, security management in hostile environments, and community resilience building. My extensive experience in coordinating assessment, design, protection, gender and inclusion in emergencies, implementing and monitoring cash and voucher assistance programmes, and leading response operations for both complex and natural disasters make me a perfect fit for this role.
My specialties include security, civil-military coordination, risk management, crisis and disaster management, emergency and post-conflict operations, project management and development, and emergency public health operations (pandemic and epidemic), including mass casualty and fatality management. I have also excelled in donor management and have a proven track record of effectively managing and implementing projects in challenging and dynamic environments.
What I like the most about this particular position at The Swedish Red Cross is the opportunity to work as a team and take on a facilitator role. I believe that this is the best approach for creating a lasting impact in humanitarian work. As a person, I am constructive, flexible, and solution-oriented. I am proactive and able to work independently, and I can easily adapt to change. I am also comfortable handling high workloads and working in stressful circumstances. Additionally, I am ready and willing to travel to the field as the security situation allows.
In my previous roles, I have worked in the Horn of Africa, responding to complex and natural disasters such as the Sudan conflict population movement emergency. In this role, I led and supported the operation's implementation and coordination as a Field Operations Coordinator at the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). I have also provided strategic leadership in regional development, governance capacity, and youth and volunteer development as a Regional Manager at the Kenya Red Cross.
My mission is to contribute to the assistance of vulnerable people through a movement-coordinated approach, ensuring proper technical support and high-quality humanitarian services. I am passionate about crisis management, migration and displacement, and anticipatory action, and I seek to apply my skills and expertise in challenging and dynamic environments.
In the role of the SRC Programme Manager in Palestine, I understand that I will be part of the Middle East North Africa and Asia Pacific Unit (MENA AP), line managed by the Head of Unit based in Stockholm. I am excited about the opportunity to work closely with the SRC Country Representative based in Ramallah. My main responsibility will be to support PRCS in managing and implementing projects in a sustainable manner, in partnership with SRC. I am not expected to implement activities myself, but rather guide, mentor, and train PRCS staff and volunteers to ensure sustainability and ownership. I will also coordinate technical support from SRC Policy and Thematic unit where required.
In the next 6 months, I am committed to achieving two specific goals for SRC and the Programme Manager role. Firstly, I will work towards building a sustainable HR structure for SRC Palestine field office, with a focus on localization. This will involve proposing a long-term structure, recruiting the necessary staff, and capacity building local staff to ensure they are fully operational when my temporary assignment ends. Secondly, I will support in coordinating with PRCS on 2024-2025 projects detailed planning and in mobilizing the necessary technical support to our projects.
In my role, I will be responsible for supporting the operating National Society in managing and coordinating programme implementation, including design and planning. I will also ensure adequate monitoring, reporting, and evaluation, as well as financial monitoring to ensure that donor requirements are met during programme implementation. I will also conduct regular field visits with PRCS counterparts to operational sites, identify and help solve any critical challenges/issues faced in the programme, and collect success stories and lessons learned. In addition, I will maintain a continuous dialogue with PRCS about opportunities, achievements, and challenges in the cooperation with SRC, including requests for technical support. I will also be responsible for reporting (narratively and financially) on designated projects as required to SRC internally and externally, ensuring compliance, including back donor reporting, and submission of annual audits.
Palestine is my preferred location for this role, and I am excited about the opportunity to work in this region. I am confident that my skills, expertise, and passion for humanitarian work make me a strong candidate for the Temporary Programme Manager position at The Swedish Red Cross.
Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss my qualifications further and how I can contribute to the mission and vision of The Swedish Red Cross.
Sincerely,
