and autism. Neurodevelopmental disorders affect millions of people and are often refractory to treatments. Her group employs many different techniques
from molecular biology to behavior
to identify common pathophysiological mechanisms underlying this group of disorders. Neurodevelopmental disorders are caused by mutations in a plethora of genes
whose role in the brain is mostly unknown. Identifying the molecular mechanisms underlying these genetic forms of seizure
autism syndromes
and intellectual disability may retain the key to develop therapeutic strategies for this group of conditions. The Novarino group studies the function of epilepsy
intellectual disability
and autism-causing genes at the system
cellular
and molecular levels with the goal of providing a framework for the development of effective pharmacological therapies and the background for the identification of new pathological genetic variants. Their work in understanding the underlying mechanisms will moreover advance the overall understanding of the human brain.

My name is Melike Cansel EREN and I am a highly motivated individual with a strong passion for research in the field of neurodevelopmental disorders. I was thrilled to learn about your current projects, which align perfectly with my academic background and research interests. As a highly driven individual, I have always been fascinated by the genetic and molecular basis of neurodevelopmental disorders. My previous research experiences, including my Master's thesis on investigating the gene expression of TopoII ß in LPS-induced HMC3 microglia cell line, have equipped me with a strong foundation in molecular biology techniques. I am also well-versed in various laboratory procedures, techniques, and documentation, with a proficiency in statistical analysis software such as SPSS, MATLAB, and Python. What truly excites me about this position is the opportunity to work on current projects focusing on the molecular mechanisms underlying autism spectrum disorders, chromatin remodeling in intellectual disability, and metabolic pathways in neurodevelopmental disorders. I am particularly interested in studying the convergences and divergences across genetically defined autism disorders, as well as the identification of common pathophysiological mechanisms underlying inherited forms of neurodevelopmental disorders. In addition to my academic background, I have also gained practical experience through my internships at Pamukkale University Medicine Faculty Research and Preparation Hospital in Turkey. During this time, I had the opportunity to work in various departments, including neurological rehabilitation, cardio-pulmonary rehabilitation, intensive care rehabilitation, and geriatric rehabilitation. I also contributed to a project on cognitive rehabilitation, providing regular memory exercises and clinical Pilates classes to a healthy control group. Furthermore, I conducted an evaluation of joint gaps and muscle performances in 1,000 students aged 7-10 years, and a questionnaire study on 3,500 patients to determine the prevalence of urinary incontinence in geriatric patients. These experiences have honed my communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and time management skills, which are essential for a successful research assistant. Moreover, I have also worked as an intern physiotherapist at Pamukkale University Medicine Faculty Research and Preparation Hospital Department of Neurology, where I had the opportunity to work in the multiple sclerosis (MS) and Parkinson's disease (PD) clinics.
