North Carolina Virtual Public School

NCVPS

My name is Lea Dixon and I have been teaching English in North Carolina since the fall of 2000. I have done almost everything in education at this point except teach for NCVPS. I have taught every grade 9-12 many times
as well as every level from inclusion to AP Language and Literature. I have written curriculum
made pacing guides
and mentored my peers. I coached softball for many years and sponsored clubs. I have been department chair of twenty women English teachers. I have been on every committee a school can have
and I am the NCAE local president for Dare County. Manteo High School is an AVID Demonstration school
which we attained last year during my first year of teaching the AVID elective juniors and seniors. I am AVID trained and will be heading to Baltimore for more training this summer. I became National Board Certified in 2007 and re-certified in 2017. I am an effective
successful English teacher who is ready for a new challenge. While making small adjustments and modifications
I was able to cover my full curriculum everyday on the screen during COVID Remote Learning. I take my students' learning seriously and I like to call myself relentless. If the students come to school
then I can take care of the rest. I will not let a student escape without learning the skills necessary to be successful in my class. I always make myself available before
during
and after school to help students to send the message that learning is important. My students understand that expectations are high in my class
that we will work hard every day
and that English is the most important subject because you will use the skills developed in English classes the rest of your life. I may be a little biased. My husband (PE) and I are both teachers. We have a twelve year old son
who is almost done with the sixth grade. He is pretty self-sufficient at this point
so I have plenty of time and energy to commit to NCVPS. Personally
I would love to familiarize myself with the middle school curriculum
not only to support my child
but more so to create vertical alignment between the middle school and high school in Manteo. This is one of our departmental goals for the next two years. I do realize that the position is for middle school (6-8) and I am only high school certified. If the middle school certification is a requirement for the position
then I am very sorry I made you review my application. I hope you will consider me if a high school English position becomes available.
