based in Bloomsbury
is a welcoming
inclusive university situated at the heart of one of the world’s greatest cities. UCL is a top-ranked university in the UK for research in psychology
psychiatry & neuroscience and the university hosts one of the largest concentrations of biomedical research in the world
particularly in neuroscience and mental health. The post will be based within the Division of Psychology and Language Sciences (www.ucl.ac.uk/pals) in the Faculty of Brain Sciences. This Division houses a number of research departments
one of which is the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience (ICN). ICN is an inter-disciplinary research institute
bringing together different disciplines with common interests in the human mind and brain
in both health and disease. The ICN has over 120 staff
including a vibrant body of postdoctoral and postgraduate researchers
plus clinical fellows
organised into distinct research groups. The post-holder will be part of the Neuroscience and Mental Health Group. They will also have an attachment to the UCL Division of Psychiatry
where there is a group of approximately 30 academic psychiatry trainees who meet monthly to provide career advice and support. The aim of the Neuroscience and Mental Health group at the ICN is to understand the neural and cognitive mechanisms underlying psychiatric symptoms. We utilise experimental techniques drawn from cognitive psychology
functional neuroimaging
psychopharmacology
computational modelling and genetics
both in individuals suffering from mental health problems and healthy volunteers. Main purpose of the job This is an exciting opportunity to join a multidisciplinary team
led by Professor Jonathan Roiser (UCL Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience)
who is collaborating with two psychiatrists - Professor Glyn Lewis (UCL Division of Psychiatry) and Professor Oliver Howes (KCL
Institute of Psychiatry
Psychologyand Neuroscience) - to carry out research in the area of cognitive neuroscience relating to mental health and physical exercise
specifically on a research programme funded by the Wellcome Trust (the LIFE trial: https://wellcome.org/news/how-does-exercise-help-depression). Other members of the research team include a sports scientist
a biochemist and a statistician
which will allow insights into the antidepressant effects of exercise at multiple levels of understanding. The post-holder will primarily be responsible for running positron emission tomography (PET) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans as part of the LIFE trial
and other cognitive neuroscience experiments with humans
as well as performing mental health assessments for participants. The PET component of the study will be carried out with Oliver Howes (Institute of Psychiatry
Psychologyand Neuroscience) at the King's College London & Guy's and St Thomas' PET Centre
while MRI scanning will occur at UCL. The post-holder will also be expected to record and assist with: the analysis of data; recruiting and maintaining a secure database of study participants; assisting with administrative tasks relating to the management of the experiments
and the research group; and writing up the results of studies. Duration: This position is offered for anywhere between 1-3 years
