I strongly feel that through my diverse and unique lived experience as a person with ADHD
dyslexia and other neurodiverse sensitivities
I have an inside knowledge and understanding as to what possible hurdles
advantages and changes we need to make as a society to better understand neurodivergence. As a qualified Art psychotherapist who has worked within the NHS I have gained the perspective of the neurodivergent employees working in the nhs
there’s an unfortunate array of problems surrounding discrimination
alienation and confusion as to how to act but also a resistance to listen to my needs. I found everything was incredibly medical modal driven
rigid and nonperson centred. I found this to be the case not only for myself but the neurodivergent individuals seeking care within the NHS. This experience remains prominent in my mind as it changed the course of my career path
having wanted to work with the NHS most of my life to provide therapeutic services to individuals like myself there was a realisation that I couldn’t be held or contained within NHS. My focus steered towards advocating for neurodivergent individuals in a charity; holding meetings with the patients along with care teams to actively make sure they are as much a part of the process of their own care as anyone else and taking a much more holistic approach to care using the same values as the culture of care programme. I was delighted to read about the quality of care movement within the NHS and thought because of my experience and want for neurodivergent individuals to be heard that I would be a valued highly dynamic part of the team.
