Description
- As a Staff Backend Engineer on GitLab's Core DevOps team, you'll provide technical leadership across your team and adjacent teams, leading large backend initiatives and guiding the modernization of a monolith into modular, reusable systems.
- You will work with Product, Frontend, Infrastructure, Security, Data, and Engineering Managers to lead complex backend architecture, make product trade-offs, and influence technical direction.
- Responsibilities include driving modular backend, service, data, and platform architecture; defining standards for APIs, schema evolution, testing, security, performance, observability, operability, and maintainability; establishing dependency management, data ownership, eventing, failure isolation, and operational documentation; setting Go service patterns and Kubernetes practices and guiding Rust adoption where appropriate; participating in on-call and incident response and converting incident lessons into improvements; partnering on roadmap decisions and investment trade-offs; and mentoring engineers while leading adoption of AI-assisted engineering workflows.
