Dear I am writing to express my enthusiastic interest in the Custodial Supervisor position at Queensland Corrective Services (QCS). With a decade of unwavering commitment to QCS
I am excited to offer my skills and experience in custodial management to contribute positively to the organisation's mission. During my extensive tenure with QCS
I have diligently maintained all mandatory training qualifications
including obtaining a Certificate IV in Correctional Practice and a Diploma in Correctional Management. These qualifications
along with my hands-on experience
have equipped me to excel in this role. As an Acting Correctional Supervisor at Woodford Correctional Centre for over five years
I have honed my leadership and teamwork skills. I firmly believe that our teams are our most valuable resource
and I have consistently drawn upon individuals' unique abilities and knowledge to tackle the dynamic challenges of our environment. I lead by example
maintain open communication
and motivate staff to perform at their best. My approach includes conducting regular briefings to ensure staff are well-informed and appropriately trained. For instance
during a night shift when a self-harm incident occurred
I conducted an operational debrief
encouraging team interaction and providing support information. This initiative received positive feedback from Area Management and the QHealth Supervisor
affirming the staff's sense of support and safety. In my capacity as an incident controller
I swiftly responded to a cell fire in one of the accommodation units. I orchestrated a comprehensive plan to ensure the safety and security of the centre
staff
and prisoners. I coordinated the deployment of Tactical Response Officers
activated the Q Health team
and conducted health and safety checks. Following the incident
I led a critical incident debrief and ensured a smooth return to normal operations within the unit. My ability to work collaboratively extends to maintaining positive relationships with various stakeholders and external providers. These include Q Health
Sentence Management
Intelligence Department
Q Build
QPS
and QAS
all of whom play crucial roles in our operations. As WHS representative
I have successfully coached my team to embrace change
work to their strengths
and develop professionally. I excel in conducting difficult conversations with staff
seeking to address issues constructively and promote improvement. In challenging situations
such as external escort emergencies
I have demonstrated strong leadership. For example
during a Code Pink incident with prisoners on board
I coordinated a complex operation that involved deploying the Delta unit
securing Queensland Police assistance
and ensuring prisoner security and community safety. I have contributed to strategic planning and implementation
leading transformational change processes to improve internal systems. I have authored prisoner deliberate action plans and concepts of operations for detailed searches
both of which were commended by the management team. My ability to interpret Custodial Operations Practice Directives (COPD)
legislation
and local procedures has allowed me to supervise staff and prisoners effectively. I consistently communicate operational changes to staff and conduct audits to ensure compliance
addressing any concerns or shortfalls promptly. I prioritise case management and understand its vital role in prisoner progression and rehabilitation. I am instrumental in fostering a supportive and accountable environment for prisoners. Furthermore
I have contributed to training packages for WFD escort drivers and participated in the statewide implementation of DFV notifications on IOMS
demonstrating my proactive involvement in enhancing our practices. I approach my work with professionalism
pride
and a dedication to fostering positive change. I am confident that my skill set
experience
and passion make me a valuable candidate for the Custodial Supervisor role at QCS. I am eager to discuss this opportunity further and can be reached at 0497865118 or james.kraayenbrink@corrections.qld.gov.au. Thank you for considering my application
and I look forward to the possibility of contributing to the new LVCC. Sincerely
