Description
- The Consumer Products Infrastructure team builds and operates high-performance computing platforms supporting product design, simulation, and validation for OpenAI’s consumer hardware and software efforts.
- The HPC Systems Engineer will design, scale, and operate large HPC environments supporting over 1,000 compute nodes, used for engineering simulations like FEA, CFD, and multiphysics.
- Responsibilities include deploying HPC clusters, optimizing workload management with tools like Slurm and IBM/Platform LSF, designing workload balancing strategies, administering Linux-based systems, managing licensing infrastructure, deploying cloud solutions with Azure CycleCloud, configuring high-speed interconnects like InfiniBand, maintaining storage systems, automating workflows with Python and Bash, implementing monitoring systems, ensuring high availability, managing secure access, and documenting architecture and policies.
- The role requires extensive experience with large HPC clusters, workload managers, Linux administration, MPI, cloud provisioning, interconnects, distributed filesystems, licensing systems, and supporting engineering teams.
- Preferred qualifications include experience with simulation-driven product development, containerized HPC workflows, infrastructure-as-code tools, profiling and performance analysis, and strong communication skills.

Requirements
- 7+ years of experience designing and operating large-scale HPC clusters (1,000+ nodes).
- Deep expertise with NC, IBM/Platform LSF, and Slurm workload managers.
- Strong Linux system administration experience (RHEL-family preferred).
- Hands-on experience with MPI, parallel scaling, and performance tuning for simulation workloads.
- Experience using Azure CycleCloud to provision and manage HPC clusters in hybrid cloud environments.
- Proven experience operating InfiniBand or other high-speed interconnects.
- Strong Python and Bash skills for automation, tooling, and workflow optimization.
- Experience with distributed filesystems (NFS, DFS, Lustre, GPFS, BeeGFS).
- Deep familiarity with HPC licensing systems (FlexLM, DSLS, RLM, LUM).
- Experience supporting product-oriented engineering or simulation teams.
- Strong networking fundamentals (DNS, DHCP, VLANs, routing, security).
